I Don’t Know How to Be a Boyfriend
I don’t know how to be a fucking boyfriend. I know how to show up, take care of people, and think in years instead of days. Apparently that’s not dating… that’s marriage energy. I missed the rules, skipped the games, and went straight to commitment.
A journal entry from a man who skipped the tutorial and lived with the final boss for decades
I don’t know how to be a fucking boyfriend.
Like… at all.
Apparently there are rules. Timelines. Texting delays. Strategic distance. Mystery. Emotional edging. Flirting tactics. Some mysterious dance where you’re supposed to want someone but not too much, show interest but not that much, care but only in measured, socially approved doses.
Yeah… I missed that entire fucking class in life.
If I see something you’d like, I buy it. Not as a move. Not as leverage. Not as a “see how thoughtful I am” performance. My brain just goes, oh… that would make her smile, and my body walks to the register. If the trash is full, I take it out. If there’s a mess, I clean it. If you need something from the store, I grab my keys. If a kid is hungry in the morning, I feed them. If they need help getting dressed for school, I’m already there tying shoes and hunting for the missing sock like it’s a life-or-death mission.
This isn’t romance. This is muscle memory and routine easily settled into.
I don’t know how to be extra flirty or extra romantic. I don’t know how to tease you into some slow-burn, situationship-style, mysterious desire. I don’t hover at the edge of someone’s life like a fucking teaser trailer. When I think about love, my brain doesn’t think in days or weeks or “let’s see where this goes.” My brain jumps straight to five years from now. Ten years from now. Shared routines. Shared responsibilities. Shared chaos. Molded lives. Intertwined logistics. The boring stuff. The real stuff.
Apparently… that’s not boyfriend behavior.
Here’s the problem. I’ve been a husband. Legally for 14 years. Realistically for about 18. That’s all I fucking know how to be.
A boyfriend is supposed to be light. Playful. Detached enough to walk away if the vibe shifts. A husband shows up with a toolbox and a calendar and starts mentally rearranging his life to make space. A boyfriend wonders if he should text. A husband just calls. A boyfriend waits. A husband moves. A boyfriend keeps options open. A husband closes the door behind him and fucking locks it.
And I don’t know how to stand halfway in a doorway.
People have told me there are rules to dating. Don’t say this. Don’t say that. Don’t text too fast. Don’t care too much or she won't be interested. What? Learn someone’s fucking love language before attempting to love them.
What?! Really? So I need to study you like a manual before I’m allowed to care? Is modern dating the equivalent of building Ikea furniture?
Fuck that.
Mistakes are how bonds are forged. Missteps are how rhythm is found. You don’t learn someone by following a script. You learn them by bumping into each other, apologizing, adjusting, laughing, fucking it up, and trying again. Put the apps down. Put the books away. Stop outsourcing human connection to algorithms and Instagram therapists bullshit. Sit across from each other and learn in real time and work it the fuck out.
And for the love of God… don’t intentionally wait two days to text.
That might be the dumbest rule of all.
If you feel it, call. If you miss them, say it. If you want to see them, make time. Time without that person should feel like less than the time with them… not a strategy. Not a power play. Not a test of emotional endurance. Love isn’t a chess match. It’s not about who blinks first. It’s about who shows up consistently enough that blinking doesn’t even fucking matter.
A boyfriend keeps space on purpose. A husband closes distance by instinct.
A boyfriend flirts with possibility. A husband plans around reality.
A boyfriend asks, where is this going? A husband quietly starts building the road.
And I think that’s where I get fucked up in modern dating.
When I fall in love... I don’t know how to divide my space. I don’t know how to restrain affection on purpose. I don’t know how to pretend I’m less invested than I am. When I commit… even as a “boyfriend”… I’m already rearranging furniture in my head and figuring out how our lives could fit together. Not because I fall easy… although yeah, maybe I do. But that’s not weakness. That’s depth. That’s intention. That’s a man who doesn’t love in fragments and pursues what he wants with intention.
So yeah. I don’t know how to be a fucking boyfriend.
I know how to show up. I know how to care loudly. I know how to build something real without asking permission from dating culture first. I probably linger too much, it feels weird for me to not be with the person... Why would we be separate? Yea I'm a crazy person... lol... not really, but I don't like space once we've both committed. I don't see a reason for it.
If that makes me bad at dating… So fucking be it.
I wasn’t built for the audition phase. And I will probably be doomed to be alone for life because with the auditions I'll never get the part. I'll be dismissed as a potential partner because I commit too fast, or hang around too much, fall into routines of ordinary life like grocery shopping and chores. Nobody wants to date that dude... They think it's love bombing or some therapy bullshit and kick me to the curb like Derek Vinyard.
Anyways... thought for the moment... Any tips on how to be a proper boyfriend in 2026?
