You Were Never Mine by Blood… But You’re Mine by Choice

I didn’t build my life early… I drifted, reacted, and learned the hard way. You don’t have to. Build with purpose. Live with fire. Be present. Choose your path… or life will choose it for you. And I will always be proud of who you become.

You Were Never Mine by Blood… But You’re Mine by Choice

A letter about building a life that no one can take from you

Listen to me… not as someone who got everything right… because I didn’t… but as a man who’s lived enough life to have some perspective on how easy it is to drift into something you never chose.

You were never mine by blood… and honestly… that might be the best thing that ever happened to you. Blood doesn’t guarantee anything… not love… not guidance… not strength… and I come from a past that was messy, harsh, and often empty of the things that should've been there.

I learned how to survive before I ever learned how to actually live… I didn’t grow up surrounded by open love, connection, or real guidance… and you know a lot of my past. It wasn’t built on support or direction… it was built on figuring shit out alone and just getting through the day.

I tried to be better than that for you… even when I didn’t always get it right. I tried to give you more presence, more awareness, more intention than I had… and I need you to understand something most people don’t realize until it’s too late… you don’t inherit your future from your past… you fucking build it in your present.

You don’t accidentally end up with a life you’re proud of. You don’t just “be a good person” and somehow everything falls into fucking place. That’s not how this works. Life will absolutely write your story for you if you let it… it will hand you expectations, limitations, opinions, and fears from people who don’t even have their own lives figured out… and if you’re not paying attention, you’ll start living a life that was never yours in the first place.

Don’t let that happen. Build something that belongs to you… a life, a mindset, a standard, a future that no one else controls… not your friends, not your family, not society, and not even me. If I ever become someone who limits you or pulls you away from who you’re meant to be… ignore me… because nothing matters more than you becoming fully yourself.

That requires fire. Real fire. The kind that pushes you when it'd be easier to stay comfortable. The kind that forces you to grow when everything in you wants to stay the same. Follow what makes you come alive… not what’s safe, not what keeps the peace, not what makes other people comfortable. Follow what actually makes you feel aligned, driven, and proud of who you’re becoming.

That’s your path. And once you find it… protect it like hell… because people will try to take it from you, not always on purpose, but it'll happen. They’ll project their fears onto you, question your decisions, and try to pull you back into a life that makes sense to them or a life that doesn't reflect your goals.

Let them stay there. You keep moving. Some people go through life avoiding responsibility for their actions… they find ways to shift blame, justify their choices, or explain everything away as circumstances or some bigger plan instead of owning what they’ve done. You’ve seen that up close. Learn from it… not by repeating it, but by choosing differently.

Don’t put up with shit from anyone. I don’t care who they are. Family doesn’t get a free fucking pass to disrespect you. Friends don’t get to drain you and your time needlessly. Relationships don’t get to break you while calling it love. Broken people will try to pull you into their world because they don’t want to be alone in it… and it’s not your job to save them. Your job is to build a life that stands on its own… one that can’t be shaken by someone else’s instability or negativity.

Life will hit you. Hard. People will disappoint you. Things will fall apart that you thought were permanent. And in those moments, you'll have a choice…

You can become bitter… or you can become better.

Choose better… every single fucking time. Even when it hurts, even when it feels unfair, even when everything in you wants to shut down. Your past doesn't get to define your future unless you hand it that power.

I know I wasn’t perfect. I know I missed moments I should’ve been there for. I know there were times I should’ve stood stronger, protected more, walked beside you more, and held you longer so you knew without a doubt that I was there and that you were loved. I also know I wasn’t the man I am now back then… and I’m sorry for that.

That’s on me… and I own that.

But none of that changes this… I love you deeply, and I'm proud of the role I’ve had in your life… because being your father was never about blood… it was a choice… and I would choose it again every single time.

There’s something else you need to understand… I do forgive your mom for everything that happened in the end, and if you haven't, you need to. Truly. I don’t carry hate, and I don’t want you to carry it either. Forgiveness and acceptance are not the same thing… and that distinction matters more than most people realize. My choice to leave wasn’t about anger… it was about alignment.

It was about living a life by example for you.

If I had gone back and tried to force it to work, I would’ve been showing you that boundaries don’t matter… that values can be bent when it’s uncomfortable… that your core beliefs are negotiable when life gets fucking hard. And that’s not a lesson I'll ever teach you.

I want you to see… through action, not words… that you can forgive someone and still walk away because actions have consequences and what defines you matters. That you can love someone and still choose yourself. That you can accept what happened on both sides without accepting a life that breaks who you are.

I’ve always tried to lead you by example… with a high standard of consistent morals in action. Yeah… I know I say some wild shit sometimes… I talk shit to anyone and everyone… I’ve been reactive in hard moments… I’m human. But at my core, every decision I’ve made has had you in mind. Every step… even the hard ones… was about showing you a better way to live.

I hope as you reflect on all of this… now or years from now… you see it clearly. You are loved. You were always loved. And everything I’ve done… even when it didn’t look perfect… was me doing my best to guide you toward a stronger life, a clearer perspective, and a future that’s yours to build.

Even now… as you grow into your own lives… I’m still walking that path with you. That doesn’t stop. It doesn’t fade. It doesn’t go away. I’m here… and that will never change. I'm your father forever and I will always be with you.

So build something that's yours. And listen… this part matters more than you probably realize right now… simply drifting in life will destroy your life if you let it. It’s quiet, it’s slow, and it feels harmless in the moment… but it compounds over time. You wake up one day and realize years have passed and you were just reacting to life instead of fucking building it.

I lived that. I drifted longer than I should have. I waited too long to build real structure… real discipline… real standards for myself. I waited too long to learn how to validate myself instead of looking for it from other people, situations, or outcomes. And by the time I figured it out… I had a lot more to rebuild than I ever should have.

Please don’t wait.

You have time… but don’t fucking waste it.

Start building structure early. Build habits that make you stronger. Build discipline that carries you on the days you don’t feel motivated. Build standards so high that your life has direction even when everything around you feels uncertain. Because motivation fades… feelings change… people come and go… but discipline and structure… those stay with you and carry you forward no matter what.

The goal isn’t to build a life that’s void of pain or struggle… that’s not real and it’s not possible. The goal is to live fearlessly and build a self-image that can handle any pain that comes. That kind of belief… that kind of internal strength… is what keeps you moving forward when life hits hard.

Live your life on purpose. Not occasionally… not when it’s convenient… but every single day. Know where you’re going. Know what you stand for. Know what you refuse to tolerate. Build a foundation so strong that nothing can fucking shake it.

Fifty-year-old you is watching.

And I can tell you exactly what they want for you… they don't want you to look back with regret wondering where the fucking time went. They don't want you wishing you had started earlier, tried harder, or believed in yourself just a little more a little bit sooner. They want you to show up now… to build now… to move now... to create a life in health and wealth that actually means something so that when you get here… you’re proud… not rebuilding.

So go create a life filled with purpose, passion, and something real. Surround yourself with people who make you better, not people who keep you comfortable, or even worse, people that bring you down and remove you from your potential.

Show up fully in your life… don’t just exist in it.

Be present… actually present… in the moment and in the lives of the people that matter to you. I worked a lot… for a lot of reasons… some good, some not… and I missed parts of life I don’t get back. So hear this from me clearly… work hard, build your life, chase your goals… but don’t lose the moments that make it all worth it.

Success means nothing if you weren’t there to experience it or share it with the people you care about. Give your best to the moments that matter because time doesn't wait for anyone… and once it’s gone, it’s fucking gone. Live boldly enough that people feel it. Live with purpose strong enough that people respect it. Live with a fucking fire that makes it impossible to ignore who you are becoming.

And no matter what happens… be proud of yourself… not because everything is perfect, but because you're showing up, building, growing, and becoming something real. You get to decide who you become… not the world, not your past, not anyone else… you.

Always you.

And before I end this… I need you to hear this clearly.

I am so fucking proud of all of you.

Tiyana… Sierra… Cameron… Trinity… Sunshine… you are my chosen family.

Not by blood… but by something stronger… by choice, by love, by the life we’ve lived and experienced together.

I see who you are. I see who you’re becoming. And no matter where life takes you, no matter what paths you choose… I am proud of you.

Always have been. Always will be.
